Join us for a morning of exploring Romanian geography and customs and the way they shaped the folk dress. Learn the characteristics of each county and understand how the status is expressed through what one wears in the village. We’ll discuss the similarities with the dress of neighboring regions and the Pre-Christian heritage in one of the oldest peoples of Europe.
Because of the beauty of the Romanian traditional dress, Queen Mary of Romania used to wear it at the beginning of the last century at official balls, launching a new fashion among the Romanian aristocracy and rich people of the time. In the 70s, the Romanian blouse was again very fashionable, and ABBA singers, among other artists at the time, used to wear them at concerts. There is a famous painting by Matisse called the Romanian blouse that inspired Yves Saint Laurent for one of his creations.
There are areas in Romania – especially in Maramures – were the traditional dress is still worn on Sundays on the streets, at the church and at local feasts. This conference gives you a glimpse into Antiquity, as the dress remained unchanged for centuries, very similar to the depiction of our ancestors on the Trajan’s Column in Rome.
